What is an alternator?

The main function of the alternator is to convert power from the engine to electrical energy to keep the battery in tip-top condition.

What is a starter?

The starter solenoid is essentially a large electronic switch that can handle lots of current. When you turn the ignition key, it activates the solenoid to power the motor.

Future developments

Manufacturers are now developing more powerfull alternators to cope with 36 and 42 volts rather than today's 12 volt systems.

Liquid-cooled alternators are also being developed which are more compact, powerful and quieter than traditional units. Not stopping there, future technology may well include an integrated starter and alternator with direct drive to the engine crankshaft.
